We had a good sized  pine taken out of our backyard today. I would not do this guy’s job for any amount of money, and yes there is a guy in this picture.

That is much tree.

Probably the tallest one I've had at a house but not nearly the biggest around.  That's life in the PNW.

I miss living somewhere with real trees

Apparently there was close to an accident taking down a tree at my parents’ on Monday. It was already partially uprooted and leaning against another tree. T hey sent a guy up to take off some branches before cutting it down so it wouldn’t be stuck. They had just finished telling my dad it was stable enough to have someone safely up there when it shifted significantly. They got their guy down quickly and decide that they were in fact good to cut it down without any more cleanup at the top. It wasn’t able to fall all the way down, but they got it to where could attack it from the ground.

I’m not good with heights. I don’t think I could ever do that. I know someone who does that for a living though.

A neighbor had a tall pine tree removed, the tree trimmer would cut sections of the trunk and you could feel the impact though the foundation.

My dad had his palm trees trimmed the other day. Terrifying.

This one was leaning but still solid. They were able to limb it and then take it down in chunks without any drama. At least to them. I was scared just watching.

I had one uncle that did trees and another that was a lineman for a power company. I don't like getting more than 6ft. off the ground.

It’s definitely a scary profession. Maybe someday soon we’ll get chainsaw drones.

Good news is that my parents are on 6 acres, so even though this one was close enough to hit the house if it well the wrong way, there was plenty of room for them drop it into the forest for chopping up, instead of having to take it down piece by piece (or lift it out with a crane). I’m glad my parents are moving though, they’ve got two mega pine trees near the buildings that are very much as big as these pines get (~100ft tall, 2.5-3ft diameter trunks) without any other trees nearby to shield them from the wind. I’m sure t hey are either going to be worth a lot of money to a tree service or to building contractor in the near future.

Definitely a lot scarier when it's trimmed like that

Me neither, but my fear of heights is also dependent on how embarrassing having that fear is at a particular point in time. In other words, I can force myself to fake it when I have to, but I really prefer to stay away from high things if I have the choice. Same thing with germaphobia, I can suppress it if it will be too insulting/socially awkward for the people I’m with, but I’d really rather not.

Last summer we watched a bunch of guys cutting a tree near some condos. We were just driving by but it caught our attention because it appeared to be getting away from them, leaning the wrong way after cutting it partially. All the guys were hanging on to one end of a rope like a game of tug-o-war and they were losing. One guy ran and grabbed a piece of equipment which they were miraculously able to get attached to the rope, but now the rope was shorter than the tree. When it started to fall, they all scattered and one guy barely escaped.

I am very capable with tree felling, but I also know my limits and won’t come close to approaching them if people or buildings are involved.

Yep, you could definitely feel the chunks hitting the ground. Even with the tires they covered the ground with there’s still a big dent in the ground.

I’ve always kinda liked the idea of a Linesman job. I really like working at heights. Ladders and platforms are weirdly second nature to me. And extra oddly as a mountain kid I’ve got good sea-legs too.

I recall a video where a spinning chainsaw rig is suspended under a helicopter and then it ripped around and “topped” a bunch of trees too close to a power line. The chainsaws running create a spin that holds the cutting  chainsaw against the tree. Was neat. Also has a lot of go bad potential.

i was out mountain biking and exited the trail to a guy cutting down a tree. He had a rope tied to his Econoline with his wife behind the wheel. As he got close to making it thru, he waved to his wife to back up. She went full throttle and instantly snapped the line. Luckily the tree fell in a good spot but it also could easily have fallen on their house.,

If you  don’t mind heights and like working outdoors it would probably be a good gig, at least most of the time. I doubt that being out fixing lines in the middle of a blizzard is a good time.

I’m fine cutting trees in the forest but I don’t have the skills to be doing that in a residential neighborhood.

He did most of the limbing on the way up. The previous owners of our house had it limbed but not nearly that high. Strange, though that they would do that to a tree that was leaning that much and not just take it down.

We had about 10 similar to that cut down from our house about 2 weeks ago. I was terrified of them since we had moved in, and only 3 more that I’ll probably cut down once my wallet recovers financially. And when they fall they shake everything, one of them actually broke our curb, and the tree folks won’t fix it, but that’s a problem for later.

Depends; I had a tree hung up near my house over our walkway a few years ago. But I could easily get a rope around it and pull it away from the house while cutting it, so I did that. I’ve got a lot of rope, cable, chain, and various equipment for it though, too.
